Fireplaces are a huge selling feature in homes and most people look forward to owning a fireplace for their warmth and functionality.  However, fireplaces and chimneys require serious maintenance in order to ensure they keep working efficiently long into the future.

The actual chimney is simply a structure that the supports the internal flue.  The chimney`s main function is to vent smoke, ash and harmful gases up and out of your home.  It is important to ensure that your chimney is working correctly because these elements can be extremely hazardous to your health and the health of your family.  As a safety measure, it is advisable to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home to be alerted if any gases have not vented and are circulating your home.

Blockages in the flue are the number one problems with chimneys.  These obstacles can be a result of a build-up of ash or creosote, debris falling into the chimney or animals nesting.  It is always a good idea to open the flue and look into the chimney before lighting a fire.

Avoiding these blockages is easy.  Simply have your chimney professionally cleaned on a regular basis to ensure its safety and functionality.
